"Orange Cupcakes!"

After being inspired by this blogger, I thought I would dig into my pantry and give Serafin a go.
I put a bunch of different goodies into a cupcake pan and let her go crazy. She wasn't too sure about it at first, but ended up having a lot of fun! Originally, the plan was to give her a jar and she would be able to pile everything in. The colors here were so pretty that I thought we might be able to put it on the table to admire her "sculpture" for the next few days. Boy was I wrong! It was my own fault though, I couldn't resist giving her water and orange food coloring, then all hell broke loose!

READY!

SET!

GO!!!!!

Let's experiment with our feet.

Now let's try different cooking instruments!

PRETTY!

But not for long!

Still pretty, if you like orange.

Uh Oh.

Hmmmm.

It's all over now.

Finishing touches.

DONE!

THE MESS.

When I asked Serafin what she made she said, "Orange cupcakes!

Mold and casting fun!

(Heart and foot casts! The smallest foot is Silas', it needs to be redone as it didn't come out all that great, the other is Serafin's foot at about 10 months. The mold in the background is for her current 2 1/2 year old foot which came out quite cool! You can see her painting it below.)

So I know it's past Valentine's Day now, but hearts are fun any time of the year, right? I made a mold and cast of Serafin's foot when she was a babe and thought it was about the right time to make one of Silas'. I put together the mold and had a bit of extra casting material and started to think about what to do with it. One thing I have in my arsenal of goodies is different shaped ice trays, perfect for making fun shaped ice or juice cubes for the kiddos and, in this case, perfect as a casting mold!

Serafin had fun painting her foot as well as a few hearts. I do have a project in mind for the rest of those little hearts, but, of course haven't gotten around to it, . . it involves Jess time ( VERY limited!), paint (gotta dig it out), canvas (just bought!) and a sunny day (will be coming soon.). Anyway, that will be inspiration for another blog piece! Any other fun ideas for molds and casts?

For anybody wanting to do casts of their kids, we got our kit here. Worth every penny and I think I've done about 5 molds with it so far. I think next time I may just by the mold and casting material separately and work out the proportions (might be cheaper that way), but this was a good starting point for me as a beginner.

Sharing our stories, . . .

(My two angels, I'm the luckiest mom on earth!)

A women will remember the day her child is born for the rest of her life. Whether a positive birthing experience or a negative birthing experience, it is so important for us to share what we have gone through with one another. In this sharing we can find common ground and healing. I was surprised at myself when I realized towards the end of my second pregnancy with my son, that I had some post traumatic stress from my previous birth. It needed to be talked about and processed.

On the outlook, my sweet daughter, Serafin's, birth seemed so peaceful and beautiful. Parts of it were. She was born at home, no major complications, labor was long, but not very intense until the end. However, what you don't read in my birth story is that I tore horribly and my pubic bone separated because her head didn't mold when she came down the birth canal. I don't know why I didn't write about that when I got to writing the story down, in retrospect, I believe I was simply trying to push the difficulties out of my mind because it hurt to think about it. It wasn't till I lost my mom, eight months after Serafin's birth, that I realized that the only way to get through pain is to walk right through it. This insight has helped me process pain and suffering tremendously.

As I got closer and closer to the birth of my son, I realized how much I still needed to talk about the birth of my daughter. Among dealing with the ambiguity of my upcoming birth plus fears that surrounded it, somehow I was still holding onto the memory of what had happened previously. I was desperately afraid that I would tear again and have to deal with a separated pubic bone like I did the first time. Once I began focusing in on these fears, I was able to begin to fully process just how painful parts of my first birth were.

How many times have you heard someone say, "we did what it takes, momma and baby are now safe and that's all that matters." While the safety of momma and baby are of utmost importance, it is most definitely NOT all that matters. The emotional impact that unprocessed trauma has on a human being can follow them around for years and years until it is fully experienced and processed by that individual. That's why it's called post traumatic stress. Even if our minds aren't thinking about it, our bodies carry it with us till we can slow down enough to allow ourselves to be in the experience physically. For example, have you ever noticed that when you are angry, if you just stop the mind chatter and allow yourself to be angry, to sit in the feelings, wether it's a knot in your stomach or tightness in your shoulders, usually the anger shifts somehow? It either goes away, lessons or becomes something different.

Towards the end of my second pregnancy, I remember finally processing some of these old feelings. I remember sitting and noticing the tightness in my vagina when I thought about giving birth again. Feeling the flutters in my chest and allowing them to be there, not pushing them away. Just simply sitting with them, acknowledging that there was hurt in me that I was carrying around from my past experience. It was amazing to see how my fears shifted as I approached birth for the second time.

Inspiration for this blog post has come to me after attending a birth stories potluck. I hadn't had a chance to share my experience in quite some time and it felt so good to speak of it in detail. As I recalled it, I was brought to tears and was once again reminded how my body holds emotions. It is so important for me to talk about these things. It is also wonderful to hear other's experiences. I find comfort in knowing I am not alone, and I also learn from listening to others. Our stories, wether blissful, or painful need to be shared so we can learn about ourselves and each other.

A Cup of Tea

Sometimes the only thing that gets me going in the morning is a cup of tea. Something about the ritual makes me feel like it's the first step to taking care of myself at the start of a day. Wrapping my hands around a warm mug while my daughter has her breakfast or even sipping some delicious brew as I wash dishes helps me feel that I am hanging on to some sort of routine. At least I get to drink my tea, right? Seriously, these days, with the chaos of two kids, good old lemon balm, nettles or raspberry leaf nourishes my mind, body and soul. What gets you going on those mornings when you want to do absolutely nothing else besides stay in bed and sleep?

Spreading the Love!

We started working on Valentine's Day cards today. 32 cards for each kids cubby at Serafin's school! Of course, if the time is there, then handmade valentines are so much more fun than store bought (even if they are decorated with scribbles--doesn't that add to the charm?). So one afternoon, while taking advantage of the kids nap time, I pulled out the old construction paper and started cutting and pasting. Now Serafin get's to decorate them with pens, stickers, stamps and paint! Fun for her and fun for me to watch! I know it's early, but happy Valentine's Day to all of you!

Hoot Hoot! Cutest mobile ever!

Silas has really come into this world! It is amazing to watch how observant he is just at three months. We never really did the mobil thing with Serafin, but this time we decided to see if we could find something fun to hang up for him. I searched on Etsy and found a store called Lullaby Mobiles. I couldn't resist plugging her on my blog because the mobil we bought it simply darling. The pictures on her website are good, but the real thing is even cuter, FYI, we bought the Owl mobile, picture below. Silas has been staring at it and smiling, our little cutie patootie! Anyway, that's all for now. I know i've been a bit MIA, but two kids has become kind of a circus act for me right now and writing in my blog seems to be a bit of a distant past life ago. Sending love and light to all my friends and fam!
xoxo

What's all the fuss, they're only boobs!

I recently participated in a nationwide nurse-in at a Target store here in the Bay Area. Mamas all over the US were nursing their little ones in public to advocate for a women's right to breast-feed out in the open after a woman was harassed for doing it in a Texas Target store. Can you believe that in some states, it's actually illegal to feed your little on in a public space? This is something I will never understand and actually infuriates me. When did feeding our children become something that is defined as anything other than beautiful (not to mention necessary)?

Some of my most intimate times with my children have been staring down at them as they nurse away, breast-feeding is an amazingly bonding experience. Mostly, these moments occur in the comfort of my home. Life, however, moves on and we can't always be sitting in our rockers, at home gazing into our little ones eyes. Breast-feeding my little one in public does not come out of any desire to show off or prove a point (accept at a Target Nurse-In of course), it is only out of necessity. If I'm in a restaurant or grocery store and my baby needs food, there is no stopping me. I also don't feel the need to cover up (unless I'm cold). How would you like to eat with a sheet over your head? Breast-feeding is not pornography. Breast-feeding is not dirty. Breast-feeding is natural and encourages good health for both mama and baby.

Anyway, good job mamas for advocating for our rights and our children's rights! Here is the link to the news segment, in which yours truly was interviewed (my first real debut, ha ha). To all you mamas out there, don't be afraid to feed your children!
